How does the TSR system, or traffic sign recognition system, work?

Road signs are of great importance. They are the ones that make it possible to regulate the speed of drivers or behaviors that would be dangerous on a given section of road. For this reason, modern cars increasingly use systems that make it easier for vehicle users to follow the rules placed on the signs. How does the TSR system work?
- The TSR system is a traffic sign recognition technology that informs the driver about passing signs and speed limits.
- TSR uses cameras and sometimes GPS to record signs and display them on a dashboard or screen.
- Unfortunately, the system is not completely accurate, especially in difficult conditions. GPS support increases its effectiveness.

You have probably missed a road sign more than once. Such markings are usually placed every few kilometres, and sometimes in poorly visible places, so they can be easily missed. Then, for a long time, you may not know what the maximum speed limit is on a given section or what maneuvers are prohibited. The road sign recognition system comes to the rescue. How does it work?
What is TSR, or Traffic Sign Recognition System?

First of all, TSR, so road sign recognition system is to detect such markings and inform the driver about them. It was first introduced in 2008 in the Vauxhall Insignia, but is now increasingly being installed in vehicles of other brands.
The system reads the signs you pass and displays them on the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Thanks to this, even if you miss a change in the speed limit or a prohibited maneuver, you can easily return to this information. The TSR system itself contributes to greater road safety by recognizing road signs and speed limits.
How does the TSR system, or traffic sign recognition system, work?

The operation of TSR itself is not particularly complicated. The most important thing is that road sign recognition system uses cameras placed at the front of the vehicle. They record information placed on roadside structures and display it on the HeadUp windshield or dashboard. The location where the road sign icons appear depends on the car model.

In newer cars, the camera system is also supported by GPS navigation. It uses data on the rules on specific road sections contained in publicly available databases. It determines where the vehicle is currently located and, on this basis, informs the driver about the restrictions that apply to him.
Curiosity! In some car models, a change in the maximum permissible speed is also signaled by a sound. This is to ensure that the driver does not lose focus and slows down at the right moment.
Are road sign reading systems reliable?

Although a road sign reader system is undoubtedly very convenient, it does not relieve the driver of the need to pay attention to such markings themselves. It is a help in a situation when you do not notice the information on a sign you pass – because, for example, you are busy performing a manoeuvre. Then you can glance at the screen and check what rules apply on the section of road you are currently on.
It is worth remembering that TSR systems based solely on cameras are not fully accurate. It is enough to dirty the lens or the sign itself (e.g. covered by snow) for the technology to be unable to read the information. The GPS-assisted version of the TSR system is more effective, but it is important to remember that it may not have access to current data. This is important, for example, on sections where construction work has only started a few days ago. Therefore, a combination of a camera and GPS works best.
Road Sign Recognition System – Price

So it's time to move on to costs. Although road sign recognition systems in many cars they are factory-fitted, but in such cases you usually have to pay extra for the extended equipment. But what if your vehicle is older or you decide not to buy this additional element at the showroom? Then you can opt for an external camera that works similarly to the factory system.
As for the external road sign recognition assistant, its price is a few thousand złoty. The camera installed in the vehicle's cabin is also not as accurate as the factory-installed technology. It takes up space and displays information on its own screen, not on the dashboard. However, if you like car gadgets and want additional support while driving, this may be a good option.
The sign recognition system, or TSR system, is a very interesting solution. After all, it provides information about signs and speed limits, which contributes to greater road safety. It is worth remembering, however, that this does not exempt drivers from carefully observing the road and road signs while driving. For more, we invite you to our other articles.
