After a cold night, we go to the car in the morning, grab the door handle, and the door won't budge. A frozen car lock and cold-stiff seals prevent us from getting into the vehicle. How to deal with such a situation. How to unfreeze a car lock in winter and maintain it properly?

Why do car locks freeze?

A frozen car lock is a typical problem in winter. This problem is especially faced by drivers who have to park outdoors, although it may also happen that people who keep their car in an unheated garage will have difficulty opening the door.

The reason for frozen door locks is simple. Under the influence of low temperature, water changes its state of matter and turns into ice. Locks and seals tend to freeze, especially when there has been rain or snowfall.

Water may flow into the lock mechanism and when the temperature drops below zero degrees Celsius, the so-called ice plug. We may also have trouble opening the door if we have not wiped and secured the car after visiting the car wash in winter.

Is there an emergency way to get into a frozen car?

There are situations in which the lock mechanism works, but the door cannot be opened. Then we are most likely dealing with frozen seals.

When this happens, first of all, you should not react nervously. If we yank on the door, we may damage it seals or tear off the handle.

Instead of pulling, it is better to push against the door. Pressing hard several times around the seals can cause the ice to move and the door to open. We can also try spraying the area around the seals window defroster.

Let's also check if we can't open any doors other than the one on the driver's side. In the case of hatchbacks or station wagons, we can get into the interior through the trunk, although this may require some gymnastics. Once we get inside, we start the engine and turn on the heating. After some time, the car will warm up and you should be able to open the driver's door. It is worth remembering about road traffic regulations, which we discuss in more detail in the article Clearing snow from your car with the engine running may result in a fine.

What should you pay special attention to when trying to open a frozen lock?

How to unfreeze a frozen car lock and what to pay attention to? As with seals, caution is advised.

Avoid the method of pouring warm water over a frozen lock and door. If the temperature is too high, we may damage plastic and rubber elements, as well as the paint.

Moreover, warm water is a solution that may not solve the problem of a frozen lock, but may make it worse. If we do not get rid of it from the mechanism, e.g. by blowing it out with compressed air, the lock will freeze again at night.

You also need to be careful when using the car key heating method. First of all, we should not hold the lighter directly to the lock, as the flame may damage the mechanism or paint.

Heating the key itself also carries a risk. Inserting a hot piece of metal into a lock can have negative consequences. Moreover, when heating the key, we can accidentally melt the housing and thus the electronic components responsible for opening the central locking.

Why is it worth having a lock defroster?

How to open a frozen car lock without risk? It is best to use a special preparation that will melt the ice.

They are such specifics lock defroster and aerosol lock lubricant. Both products have a composition that will unlock the mechanism and will not damage rubber, metal or plastic components.

First of all, remember to carry lock de-icer or grease with you. Preparations are of no use to us if we leave them in the car overnight.

How to open a frozen car lock?

Using lock de-icer is the safest method. How to use this preparation?

The method of use is simple. We remove the lid of the packaging. Then we inject a small amount of the preparation into the lock. If the ice still holds after a few minutes, we can repeat the operation.

Opening a frozen door lock using aerosol grease is similar. Spray the lock with it and remove the excess with a tissue or cloth.

If, despite using one of the above measures, the door still does not want to open, we can additionally apply defroster or grease to the bolt. We then apply the preparation into the gap at the height of the lock, where the door locking mechanism is located.

How to unfreeze a car lock at home? For safe methods, we recommend using a hot water bottle or a bottle with warm water. When applied to the door, the ice in the frozen lock should melt.

Is it possible to prevent locks from freezing?

To avoid the problem of freezing car locks, it is best to take preventive measures. Lock de-icer or grease also act as preservatives. If we use the above measures regularly, we will prevent moisture from accumulating. Additionally, anti-freeze and lock grease can help prevent corrosion.

Remember to remove moisture from the seals and lock after visiting the car wash and use preservatives. We can also consider sealing the locks with tape overnight.

If we park our car outdoors, we can invest in a special cover. We write more about this solution in the text Is it worth buying a car cover for winter?.

If possible, it is a good idea to park your car in a place that will be sunny in the morning. This will reduce the risk of the lock and seals freezing.

Winter is an extremely difficult time for a car. Taking care of your car should not be limited only to locks and seals. Before the frost arrives, it is good to remember the rules regarding how to prepare your car for winter.
